The Fisheries Reform Scam!
Make a Submission
Shane Jones, Minister for Oceans and Fisheries, has proposed changes to the Fisheries Act that will pass control of our fisheries to wealthy quota owners – privatising our public resource. LegaSea is campaigning to oppose the proposals because they threaten to reduce your access to fish for food and will cause environmental damage that may be irreversible.
Under the guise of a ‘reform’ and increased efficiency the proposed changes will not improve the management of our fisheries. The proposals aim to weaken regulations to allow for more fish to be caught and exported. The public and marine environment will not take priority.
This Fisheries reform sounds more like a scam to us.
If there’s not enough public opposition, these changes could become law—prioritising greater commercial catches and exports over sustainability.
