We spoke up and the Minister listened. Last week David Parker, the Minister of Oceans and Fisheries, acknowledged the receipt of over 10,000 submissions in response to the recent reviews. If you were one of the submitters, Minister Parker and our future generations say thanks.

Yesterday the Minister of Oceans and Fisheries, David Parker, approved a rāhui or temporary closure of the scallop fishery off the east Coromandel coast, following a request by Ngāti Hei in February this year. The closure means no scallop harvesting by commercial, recreational and customary fishers for two years, from this Saturday September 11.

With level 4 lockdown upon us again, The Kai Ika Project is once again stepping up to distribute kaimoana to whanau in need. Last year we distributed over 55 tonnes of previously unwanted kaimoana. SeaChange announcement; Land all catch regulations; Tarakihi court case decision. It’s been a huge week with three major announcements impacting our fisheries. This week the Revitalising Our Gulf Sea Change strategy was released in response to the 2017 Sea Change Marine Spatial Plan aimed at restoring the health of the Hauraki Gulf Marine Park.

After 5 long years the Kaikōura pāua fishery is set to reopen. It's been a hard wait for one of New Zealand's most enjoyed fisheries and there is plenty of excitement at the prospect of it reopening. Stocks are looking good, but as expected, there will be are plenty of changes being recommended for recreational harvest rules.
