Make a Submission on tarakihi!

Tarakihi populations around the country are in trouble. On the east coast, around 92% of the estimated adult population has gone, and 71% from the west coast.  Commercial catch limits need to be drastically reduced so tarakihi numbers can rebuild.

Fisheries New Zealand (FNZ) is currently consulting on catch limit reductions and they want your views. It’s important you have your say because 90% of tarakihi is taken by trawling, and most of the catch is eaten by Kiwis.

FNZ’s proposals are complex, including catch reductions, area closures, and recreational daily bag limit cuts. There’s no doubt that commercial catch limits need to be reduced to bycatch-only levels now. FNZ also needs to protect juvenile tarakihi and nursery areas.

Commercial catch settings

Fisheries New Zealand is proposing three options to reduce the Total Allowable Commercial Catch (TACC) for the east and west coasts of New Zealand. The current TACC for the east coast is 2,328 tonnes (t) and 1,667.4 t for the west coast.

Option three for east and west coast is the most precautionary option and will allow only for reduced levels of bycatch.

Protection of juvenile and nursery habitat

Fisheries New Zealand is proposing year-round protection for juvenile tarakihi by restricting certain fishing methods in key areas.

1. Nursery areas: restriction on trawling, Danish seining and dredging to protect seabed habitats that provide a nursery function for tarakihi.

2. Juvenile aggregation areas: restriction on trawling to reduce the catch of sub-minimum legal size tarakihi.
