The sun’s shining brighter, the days are getting longer, and you know what that means—Labour Weekend is knocking at our door! We can almost hear the waves lapping and the fish biting. We’re just as thrilled as you are to get back out there and make some unforgettable memories this summer on the water. But before you dust off your fishing gear and fuel up your boat, it’s worth having a read through our safety checklist to make sure everything is humming along nicely before you launch. After all, nobody wants their first day back fishing ruined by an easily avoidable issue!
At FishCare, we believe that a great fishing trip starts with being prepared and looking out for one another—that’s what Principle Five of our FishCare programme is all about. So, let’s dive into some tips to ensure your adventures are both fun and safe.
Top Water Safety Tips
1. Weather or Not, Here We Come!
Mother Nature can be unpredictable. Always check the latest weather updates before you head out. If the skies look a bit moody, have a backup plan—the fish will still be there tomorrow!
2. Equipment Check—Because Surprises Belong in Stories, Not on the Water
• Boat and Gear: Give your boat, engine, and all your equipment a good once-over. Let’s avoid any “uh-oh” moments out there.
• Lifejackets: Make sure your lifejackets are in tip-top shape, gas canisters are replaced frequently, and they’re easy to grab. They might not be the latest fashion, but they will save your life. Make it a habit to wear your lifejacket whenever you’re on the water.
3. Map Out Your Adventure
• Tell a Mate: Let someone know where you’re headed and when you plan to be back. It’s always good to have someone eagerly awaiting your epic fish tales!
• Log Your Trip: Always log your trip with the Coastguard app. That way, if you get into trouble, people back home will know who to contact and where you’re fishing.
4. Stay Connected – Can You Hear Me Now?
• Communication Tools: Have your VHF radio on, flares nearby, and keep your mobile phone charged and dry—a waterproof bag is a lifesaver.
• Know Your Channels: Make sure you know your local Coastguard channel—you can find that information here.
5. Know the Lay of the Land (or Sea)
Familiarise yourself with the waterways, tides, currents, and any sneaky hazards. Use updated nautical charts and GPS if you’ve got them—it’s like having a treasure map!
6. Keep it Sober, Sailor
Save the celebratory brews for when you’re back on solid ground. Stay sharp to stay safe; clear minds catch more fish.
7. Fun in the Sun, Safely Done
Slap on that sunscreen, rock your favourite hat, and don those shades. Reapply often, especially after a dip—nobody wants to be mistaken for a lobster!
8. Stay Hydrated and Snack Smart
Pack plenty of water and some energy-boosting snacks. Keep sipping—even when you’re surrounded by water, your body still needs it!
9. First Aid Finesse
Bring a first aid kit – you never know when it might come in handy. A little know-how goes a long way in handling minor mishaps.
Looking After Your Wellbeing
Fishing isn’t just about the catch—it’s also about soaking up the serenity and recharging your spirit.
• Take It Easy: Pause, breathe, and take in that stunning scenery.
• Mindfulness Moments: Let the worries drift away with the tide.
• Lend a Hand: Keep an eye out for fellow anglers. A little help can make a big difference.
