The environment: Banning inshore trawling and dredging and transitioning to more eco-friendly fishing methods will result in a cleaner marine environment. There will be more fish in the water, fish will be healthier, and fish will be easier and cheaper to catch.
Food security: The bulk of fish exports earns less than $3kg, while retailing locally for $30kg upwards. As protein becomes more expensive and wild fish become scarcer, families have poorer access to nutritious food. Many Kiwis depend on fishing to feed their families – with rebuilt fish stocks households can access healthy food and create better health outcomes for us all. It’s about increasing the social, cultural and economic value of every fish caught.
Economic growth: A thriving fishery supports regional growth, jobs and local enterprises. More abundant local waters will encourage people to fish and process their catch locally. A mix of fishing and water based activities will help to attract tourists to the regions.
