LegaSea is a not for profit organization and we run an initiative called The Kai Ika Project. Through this kaupapa [project] we collect previously unwanted fish heads and frames and share them with the community who revere this kaimoana [seafood].
In Wellington we share over 500 kg of fish a week, but due to the stubbornly high cost of living, the demand from the community continues to grow. We hate the idea of wasting fish while there are families who will appreciate this rich source of protein so we’re planning to expand.
In order to do this we need a motivated, community-minded person who is keen to get their hands dirty in helping us step things up.
About the Role:
If you want a meaningful role, rich with community engagement, we need you. We are looking for a reliable and motivated individual to support the Wellington project lead.
This role combines two key responsibilities: ensuring the efficient distribution of kaimoana to communities and also collecting empty aluminium cans which we recycle. This provides much needed revenue to fund the project long term.
This is more than a logistics role. You will be a key part of our mission to reduce food waste, support local communities, and promote sustainability.
A full drivers license and being comfortable driving with a trailer is essential.
Key Responsibilities:
- Fish Distribution:
- Work closely with our partners and suppliers to collect, sort, and distribute fish heads and frames to communities who appreciate them
- Ensure the fish is stored, transported, and delivered in accordance with food hygiene standards
- Maintain records of distribution and report on quantities and locations served.
- Collaborate with local organisations, food banks, and community groups to identify areas with the highest need.
- Aluminum Can Collections:
- Organise and manage the collection of empty cans from community collection points and businesses around Wellington.
- Maintain accurate records of cans collected and liaise with recycling facilities.
- Help raise awareness about The Kai Ika Project and our sustainability goals.
Skills and Qualifications:
- Strong organisational and time-management skills.
- Ability to work independently.
- Good communication skills and a passion for people.
- Valid full driver’s licence
- Interest in sustainability, food security, and community outreach.
What We Offer:
- This will initially be a fixed term, part-time role for 16 hours a week.
- Supportive and collaborative team environment.
- Flexibility in working hours
- The opportunity to be part of an important and growing initiative.
If you’re passionate about food security, sustainability, and supporting your community, we’d love to hear from you. Apply now and help us make a real difference in communities around Wellington.
